It is estimated that hotels prematurely discard 15% to 20% of their linen inventory each year [1]. Every nine months or so, five-star hotels throw away their almost pristine Egyptian cotton bedsheets, which can last up to two years [2]. These linens usually end up in the landfill and can take a long time to decompose fully.
This initiative aims to collect sheets, blankets, and other bedding materials that hotels, inns, and other lodging establishments are planning to prematurely discard and we will donate them to homeless shelters, orphanages, and other mutual aid organizations to not only provide these items that are urgently needed but also significantly reduce waste. This campaign is mainly centered in the state of Texas, which has 6,004 hotels and 520,916 rooms [3]. These numbers imply a total hotel inventory of 2 million bedding sets, of which at least 200,000 bedding sets are prematurely discarded. We hope to change this trend and promote a more sustainable solution where we can find better uses for the hundreds of thousands of prematurely discarded linens.
