Menstruation is a topic that is often not discussed, especially with non-menstruators. The taboo surrounding menstruation has resulted in little awareness and education, as well as scarce support in making menstrual products accessible to all [1].
The average menstruator spends around $4,800 in their lifetime just on pads [2]. Individuals lacking access to period products are left to manage their periods using unsafe materials like rags, tissues, or even cardboard [3].
A common misconception is that period poverty is an issue limited to developing countries. But in reality, even in the United States, 1 in 4 students miss school due to the lack of access to menstrual products [4]. Moreover, United States governmental programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) do not cover the cost of these basic supplies [5].
To combat period poverty, we have worked with communities to raise funds to purchase and distribute menstrual products to underserved populations in India and the United States.
Sanctuary Foster Care Services
The Sanctuary Foster Care Services is a non-profit Foster Care agency that is based in Clear Lake, TX. Staff at Sanctuary Foster Care Services are trained in Trust-Based Relational Intervention and offer Wraparound Services to foster families. This includes providing 24/7 crisis intervention, counseling services for both the children and families in the agency, and a fierce commitment to stand behind the children and families in their care. Their mission is simple – once a child enters into their care, they make a commitment to work with that child towards healing until they are either returned to their families of origin or to permanency, such as adoption. Sanctuary Foster Care Services stops the cycle of multiple placements that so severely hurts the children in care.
